Atlanta Campaign WPA Marker #5
Hooker's repulse around New Hope Church on May 25 failed to end the fighting in the area. Both sides entrenched, and nonstop skirmishing began, lasting until June 1, when Union cavalry ironically seized Allatoona Pass without loss. Sherman, rebuffed at New Hope Church and Pickett's Mill on May 27 with high losses, finally pulled his troops back towards the railroad. He would somehow neglect to mention this entire week of fighting in his otherwise extensively detailed memoirs. Though Johnston's Confederates had held the Federal forces back for an entire week and had inflicted embarrassing defeats on them, the continuous skirmishing had also significantly raised Southern losses as well. On learning of Allatoona's fall Johnston quickly retreated to defend Atlanta.
This is the last of the 5 markers placed by the WPA pocket parks created for the defunct Atlanta Campaign National Historic Site.
